The thesis deals with the Old Bohemian Bastarda, its reconstruction, digitization and the design of a new typeface inspired by the Old Bohemian Bastarda. It is a project dedicated to a historical font from the 15th century, which is considered to be the only Czech contribution to the development of the Latin alphabet. The historical typeface has not yet been typographically or otherwise artistically processed. The Old Bohemian bastards mark a very significant milestone for Czech graphic design, as they are associated with the origins of graphic design and typography in our country.
The typeface used in the Trojan Chronicle was chosen for the reconstruction and redesign. In the theoretical part of the thesis is mentioned the contemporary context of the Trojan Chronicle, as well as the uncertainty surrounding the timing of its production. Furthermore, the development of the typeface in its historical context, Gothic type, the transition between manuscript and printed type, the invention of the printing press and its influence on the development of the typeface, the Czech primary prints, the roots of the Old Bohemian bastard and the Old Bohemian bastard used for the print of the Trojan Chronicle are described.
The practical part is based on work with a variety of graphic programs, separation of letter characters, prefabrication and determination of the ideal trace of the letters, determination of the shape of the rendering tool, setting the letters in tables, determination of the axis of inclination of the letters, design of minuscules and majuscules, filling in missing letters, drawing and designing the letters of the two, historical and contemporary, alphabets and their comparison with the model.
The processes used in the work open up the space for further study of the problems of historical typefaces. The experience can be used in the reconstruction of, not only, other Old Bohemian Bastardas. The work results in the design of two digital fonts, Bastarda 2.0 and Bastarda 2.1.
